I reviewed the Converge show at Whelans back in July, frontman Jake Bannon agreed to an interview (via email) and between moving/starting a new job I never posted it. So here it is, long overdue -

Quick chat with Converge frontman (total legend/hero of mine) and Deathwish Inc. founder Jake Bannon.

You played Whelans last Monday, so how was your first show back in Dublin after three years?

It was a positive show, we enjoyed it for sure.

You're currently on tour with album Axe to Fall, this one sees you guys work with members of Neurosis and Genghis Tron. How did those collaborations come about?

We wanted to collaborate with some friends, and this album seemed like the perfect place to do it. It was a challenge but in the end I think we are all happy with what we created together.

Would you consider those artists to be influences?

Not necessarily no. They are just friends that we admire and appreciate. I don't think there are too many aspects of our music that are directly influenced by others at this point in our band. Neurosis definitely played a role in shaping the contemporary "Do-It-Yourself" ethic that we also subscribe to. I don't know if I would call that a direct influence, but they have helped pave the way for many artists that are out there today.

Axe to Fall features some of your artwork and is available from your own label Deathwish Inc. How beneficial is it, having that much input into the creation and distribution of your albums?

It's essential, it's the best way for us to work as a band.

Tell us a bit about a regular jamming session at the Converge camp?

It's always different. When we get together, we show each other musical ideas that we have and take it from there. Sometimes songs are just small concepts, other times they are brought to the table near completed. At that point we all work together to musically refine these ideas and bring them to their final form.

After twenty years of making music has the songwriting process changed for you?

Not really no, it's still the same process.

Tell us more about Deathwish Inc...

It's a label/brand that I founded about ten years ago with our old roadie/tour manager. Since then, we've released hundreds of releases for bands that we find to be interesting. We are primarily an aggressive music label that branches out into all of it's sub-genres, etc.

What are your hopes for Converge and Deathwish Inc going forward?

I don't really have any hopes or goals for either effort. I just want them to be as pure in what they are meant to be. Musically as long as Converge is doing something that we feel is creatively fulfilling, then we continue on. As long as their are artists out there that we want to promote and help, then Deathwish will continue as well. That's about it.

After their epic performance at the Picnic last weekend Land Lovers are playing The Quad, Cork next week. Yeh Deadlies and Tiny Little Minds are scheduled in to support. I have yet to see Yeh Deadlies or Tiny Little Minds but we had Land Lovers play at Music Maker PA floor launch about two weeks ago, and they put on a savage live show. These guys are currently working with Popical Island along with the likes of the awesome Groom and the wonderful Squarehead.

Combichrist @ The Button Factory

Hailing from Norway and now based in the States Combichrist is the brainchild of lead singer Andy LaPlegua. They are about to release their sixth album and tonight they ascend the Button Factory stage.

Opening with their anthem What the F*ck is Wrong With You People, Combichrist launch into, what promises to be, a scintillating and stimulating set. The four piece appear thrilled to play tonight and the show gets off to an energetic start. However, there is a poor turnout at the Button Factory tonight which seems to affect Combichrist’s performance. They stumble on and it becomes clear that depsite all their enthusiasm, their sound lacks fervour and clear direction. Their minute crowd seem to, quite frankly, lose interest by the middle of the set. While boasts such as I Smell Electro and Feed Your Anger only make front man LaPlegue seem callow and overly eager. LaPlegua attributes the poor turnout and the docile mood to what he describes as a deteriorating scene in Ireland and thanks the audience for supporting the Aggrotech genre. It is worth mentioning that Iron Maiden are also playing at the RDS tonight who are, in all fairness, stiff competition for any artist.

At times there is a hum of Rammstein and Mindless Self Indulgence in their sound. There are also traces of early Limp Bizkit and even Crazy Town in their work. Maybe this isn’t such a terrible thing, perhaps a Nu metal revival is long overdue and Combichrist are merely paving the way. On a more optimistic note their desire to entertain is irrefutable. Tonight’s tame performance could be attributed to the fact that their current tour schedule has left them a bit jaded. A more positive impact may stem from forthcoming album Making Monsters, due for release on August 27^th via Out of Line records.

Hailing from Boston, Massachusetts with a discography that boasts seven albums (excluding split releases with the likes of Hellchild and Coalesce) Converge are now in their twentieth year. Their latest offering Axe to Fall features collaborations with Neurosis and Genghis Tron, intimidating to say the least. It’s been two years since they last paid Dublin a visit, tonight the reputable Kylesa, Gaza and Kverlertak are supporting them at Whelans.

First up are the relatively unknown Kverlertak who have the difficult task of entertaining a crowd who are, lets face it, waiting impatiently for Kylesa and Converge. Fair dos to them as they successfully grasp the audience’s attention and earn themselves a hefty cheer at the end of their set. Next in line are Salt Lake City’s Gaza. Delivering a fun and frenetic set that shakes up the somewhat reticent audience, their abrasive sound hits the spot. The pressures on Kylesa now to keep the good flow going.

Kylesa are touring with their latest album Static Tensions and interestingly enough, are backed by two drum kits tonight. However this provides for an unbalanced sound as multiple kick drums overshadow their guitars and vocals. Thankfully, they iron out the kinks in time for favorite track Time Will Fuse It’s Worth and this allows for the ferocity of Laura Pleasant’s vocals to really make an impact. Not exactly dizzying, but Pleasant’s brutal vocal range is definitely the highlight of the evening so far.

Technical difficulties make for some fumbling about in between Kylesa and Converge’s set. After a substantial wait, front man Jacob Bannon charges the stage and offers his apologies for the delay. Bannon seems to be one of these people who just exudes charisma, his presence on stage immediately draws the masses in. The crowd surges forward and a mosh pit ensues. By the time Converge reach their second number Dark Horse, many have opted out of the swelling circle pit. The more raucous fans restrain themselves just long enough to banter with Bannon in between songs. The quartet aim to engage their audience's attention, and succeed.

Tonight's set is a welcome mix of old and new material, from new release Axe to Fall to the seminal You Fail Me. Tracks such as No Heroes delight but it’s favorites such as Fault and Fracture (Jane Doe) that thrill the crowd. The show comes to an end and they thank the crowd for making this the best night on tour so far. It's clear that even after two decades together Converge are still passionate about what they do. They close with the ruminative Last Light and it seems Bannon has everyone screaming along as he roars its lyrics, a faultless exit.

I'm spinning choons this Friday night at The Pavilion with the lovely Aoife Barry Sweet Oblivion and it will be my last time djing in Cork for a while.

Enemies + Elk at the Quad 10.06.10

Tonight Enemies launch their debut album We've Been Talking at the Quad Bar, Cork. Local heroes Elk are supporting and this evening's event kicks off Enemies' month long tour. With shows scheduled for the UK and France, June is shaping up to be a hectic month for this four piece. The album (recorded at The Hive Studios and mastered by TJ Lipple) goes on official release on the 11th and this evening we get something of a preview here in Cork.

Elk mount the stage and appear completely unfazed by the lengthy day of recording that they've just put behind them. Seemingly they are in the process of recording a sophomore album and tonight's performance displays a more mature, somewhat abrasive sound. Their new material is quite reminiscent of Jesus Lizard, Les Savy Fav and at times even Shellac. Some may miss the synthpop element provided by Barry O' Sullivan (IEYF) on the first album but it's absence here proves to be more of a virtue than a hindrance. So current line - up sees Matt Hedigan on vocals and bass, Lewis Hedigan (drums) and Shane O' Sullivan (guitar) and as a three piece Elk seem tighter than ever.

From the start, Enemies appear organised and enthusiastic. Their set list concentrates on the new album with Nag Champa generating a wonderful buzz about the audience. Drummer Oisín Trench delivers sonorous Morse Code with an exactitude that speaks volumes of the kind of preparation Enemies devote to their live sets. Enemies strive for excellence and achieve it. Two drum kits set up and they use them simultaneously to give thunderous number Piano that extra bit of heft. It must be said that there is something quite mesmerizing about Enemies live. One gig goer is spotted climbing up on a stool to get a better look and sure enough others follow suit. It seems their inventive and high energy live show has the Quad crew fixated on their every move.

When bassist Mark O' Brien wraps up the evening with a warm thank you, he receives a massive cheer there even seems to be air of disappointment surrounding the end of this show. Tonight the quartet successfully showcase their music might tonight earning them a multitude of new fans. They exit the stage leaving Cork gig goers eager for more. Mission accomplished. Enemies have a sound that is akin to post rock heavyweights The Redneck Manifesto and tonight they demonstrate potential to be just as influential.

Enemies are currently on tour in Europe and We've Been Talking is now available via Richter Collective.

My second attempt at making Artist of the month a regular feat, and June is dedicated to Hudson Mohawke. A friend of mine is off traveling and we've been swapping tunes while he's away. He sent me Hudson Mohawke Rising 5 and it blew my mind, hailing from Glasgow he's just 24 years old and already signed to the reputable Warp Records.

ATP Party FAIL ! (Monotonix shut down after just 4songs)

Anyone who's seen or heard these guys is familiar with their high energy live show, it's certainly a force to be reckoned with! Monotonix are one of the reasons I bought my ticket for Pavement ATP in the first place, having seen and interviewed them at Supersonic '09 I was eager to catch them again. By the time Monotonix came round last weekend I had been partying for well over 24 hours. So, feeling rough yet ready I clambered up the front and waited patiently for the chaos to commence.

They had set up off stage amongst the crowd and were surrounded by security. ATP goers were asked to sit down, take a load off and enjoy their new material. Unfortunately for Monotonix their fans proved to be the disobedient types, two tracks in and everyone was up, dancing, crowd - surfing, the atmosphere was great. However, our lively antics did not bode well as the show was shut down almost immediately. We huddled together and chanted B**LLS**T but our efforts were futile. Security announced that our partying shenanigans were a health and safety issue, game over!

Last Saturday's event has been dubbed the shortest show in ATP history and here's what Monotonix themselves have to say about it:

They have been touring non - stop all year and playing Electric Picnic later this summer, for anyone lucky enough to have a ticket.

In other news I made it to Omar Souleyman later that night and he did not disappoint! He played for almost two hours and rounded off his show with the amazing Leh Jani. Boris played twice over the weekend and both sets were really inspiring. Wish I could shred like Wata, she's an incredible guitarist!

This will be my first ever experience of the festival so I'm totally stoked!

The reputable Pavement are curating this weekend's ATP, presenting the likes of Mission of Burma, Monotonix, Broken Social Scene, Faust, Merzbow, The Fall, and Grails. Along with the aforementioned acts, Syrian music legend Omar Souleyman is also scheduled to make an appearance. The prospect of seeing Souleyman live thrills me! He recently came into my life in the form of a mix tape, and googling him led me to the somewhat startling Leh Jani music video. Intriguing to say the least.

You guys released your sophomore album Family via Alien8 Recordings (Books on Tap, Merzbow, and Nadja). Can you tell us a bit about the label and why you chose them to release the album for you?

We've been signed to Alien8 for the past 4 years and this is our second album with them. We decided to sign with them because they were local and were big fans of their past releases. They're also really nice guys.

Family brings to mind some old skool favorites Sugarhill Gang, Run DMC, De La Soul, Beastie Boys. Who would you consider to be an influence on your musical style?

Definitely , a lot of music from the No Wave era . That band Earth , Wind and Fire are an influence as well.

Your self-titled debut album Think About Life was released in 2006, in a few words can you sum up where TAL are now, and how the group has evolved since your first release.

The band is definitely at a point right now where we don't really feel restricted to any specific form of songwriting . In the beginning , we basically wrote our songs with an old distorted and compressed casio keyboard and , drums, We pretty much got bored with that formula and started using other instruments while keeping the same level of energy and creativity. I think we're all very excited to experiment and try new songs at this point.

You recently played SXSW festival Texas. What do you enjoy most about outdoor festival performances, and how does it differ from playing smaller music venues

There's something spontaneous about playing outdoor shows. I think we all love playing them. One thing that I've observed with outdoor shows is that most of the time we're playing in front of diverse age groups. Kiddies from like 6 years old to folks in their late 60s.

I’m looking forward to catching you guys in Dublin. What can we expect from this show?

Bang bangs . Boom booms . Tooo dooo tooo dooo too dooos . And some satanic stuff.

Finally, what can we expect from TAL over the next few months?

We're looking to have a month of songwriting in June , Playing a couple of festivals in the summer and then start recording as soon as all the madness calms down. Havin' a great time !!!!

Saw her for the first time at Black Sun (Granary Theatre/Pavilion Cork) last November and I was truly amazed by her performance. Highly engaging live, Sheeran's subtle tones bring to mind Katie Kim, Tiny Vipers and Jarboe.

Aoife Barry (Sweet Oblivion) listed her as one of her top Irish Act this week, along with Squarehead, KVX, Toby Kaar and Stone Throwing Youths. Her latest offering Music for the Deep Woods is available for FREE just follow the link below:

Richter Podcast!

Recorded the first Richter Collective podcast this morning and had brilliant time working on it. I was asked last week if I would like to put together monthly podcasts for Irish label The Richter Collective, and my answer was simple. Heck yes!

The overall aim is to bring everyone up to speed on all that we can look forward to from the label over the next few months, such as the long awaited release of The Redneck Manifesto's new album 'Friendship'.
Here's a link to the first podcast, I didn't have as much time as I would have liked for this one. I'll have a few weeks before the next one to arrange interviews, promos and other lovely things.

Finally getting around to typing this up!
I was lucky enough to talk to Iron Lung at Supersonic last summer. I was one of many queuing up for an interview that day so my time was very limited. Needless to say I still had a brilliant time chatting with them, and their live show was one of my favorite moments of the weekend. Iron Lung is Jensen Ward and Jon Kortland from Seattle. Jensen is definitely the more talkative one of the two as he answered all my questions and did all the talking during their set.
I also think it's worth noting that they told me that they read Noise/Music by Cork's own Dr Paul Hegarty.

What brings you guys to Supersonic?
Jensen: Our friend Jamie Thompson told us that he might be able to get us on this festival and I guess we said we were interested so here we are!

Who are you most excited about seeing tonight?
Jensen: Corrupted and Thorr’s Hammer. Also, Rose Kemp! That will be amazing.

You played Dudefest in Indianapolis with the likes of Harvey Milk and Tombs how would you say the atmosphere differs at US festivals, if at all?
Jensen: (Laughs) Yeah! That particular festival isn’t very professional this is very organized, very well done! That one over there is pretty much whatever goes, and it’s a lot smaller scale. It’s also very free in so we can pretty much do what we want to do.

You guys have been recording for a long time now is there anyone in particular you would like to record with?
Jensen: That’s a good question. I always really wanted to do a Peel Session but unfortunately I don’t think that’s going to happen now, circumstances and all that! I liked to record over here at Southern Studios maybe. I also thought about Steve Albini but I’m not sure if that would work for us. We actually recorded some stuff in Japan and Australia that was really fun it was nice to see how people do it in comparison to home. Japan was kinda tough because of the language barrier the mix didn’t come out right, we needed a translator for the recording session.

How would you say the US hardcore scene has changed in recent years?
Jensen: Noise element-punk and hardcore has pretty much been the same for the last twenty years, some bands got a bit more metallic in the 80s and that carried on. But now that people have gotten used to heavy music they’ve gotten tired of melody and have started adding more noise and distortion. So I think the noise element is the newest most exciting facet of hardcore.

How would you say your own music has progressed over the years?
Jensen: Pretty much in that same way. I think we’ve incorporated a lot more noise and we’ve also started to collaborate with other musicians and artists. That’s how we’re changing. We’ve been a two-piece for 10 years and last year we played with a noise guy, a second guitarist and a bass player and we’re actually going to put it out as a record. It was so cool to play the songs that we were used to playing as a two-piece and adding a whole new facet to it. That’s how we’re trying to stay ahead of the game.

The track was later sampled by Destiny's Child on Bootylicious, although I'm not quite so fond of that version! You can find Edge of 17 about twenty minutes into the show.

I put in a request for an interview with Choice Music Award nominees ASIWYFA and was lucky enough to get it! Truth be told it an was especially graceless night for me at the Crane Lane last Friday. I was nervous about this one, and pretty sure I said all the wrong things to the lads prior the interview.
Anyway, I was introduced to Rory (guitar), Chris (drums) and Johnny (bass) came along soon after and the interview got underway. It was Tony's (guitar) birthday and I was told that he was off having dinner at Milano's with his Dad, bless.
I started by asking them how ASIWYFA came together, maybe an obvious question but I was curious about their musical backgrounds. This question got them chatting about the work they put in to get to this point in their careers. It was great to hear them talk about this. I ended our little chat by asking them who they would tour with, if they could tour with anyone!!! I had to know. They mentioned At the Drive In, Deftones and The Smashing Pumpkins. Epic.
We left it at that as they were about to go on. It was my first time seeing them live and it was an incredible show. Local heroes Hope Is Noise supported them, always amazing!
ASIWYFA brought the party to the The Quad after the show where C!ties were playing a late gig. Those lads never disappoint! ASIWYFA was the most fun I've had at a live show in a while. Thanks to Mitch and Dave @ Livewire for organising the gig. Massive thanks to Livewire and ASIWYFA for the interview!

Suspiria. Easily the Greatest Horror Movie of All Time!

Dario Argento's Suspiria (1977) terrified me as a teen and continues to do so. Its death scenes are violent, but tastefully done and its script is well crafted. This is a film that never ceases to entertain me. I would like to add that Argento's masterpiece is an example of how significant music is in cinema. The score, provided by Goblin augments the film's plot without making it predictable.
Goblin performed the soundtrack to Supiria at Supersonic '09 (Capsule, Birmingham) and I was lucky enough to be there for it. Needless to say it was an unforgettable experience!
Suspiria, one of my favorite films of all time and undoubtedly my all time favorite horror film.

Marvin's Revolt call it a day!

The Richter Collective announced today that Marvin's Revolt have called it a day. This comes as quite a shock considering they recently released their new album Patrolling the Heights. Then January saw them on tour in Japan, and this was organised by Parabolica (Label/Tour Organisers-Japan).

It's disappointing news to say the least, but the saying quit while you're ahead comes to mind. I interviewed Marvin's Revolt back in December following their Cork launch and they were enthusiastic, polite and professional. It was a pleasure.

Hopefully this won't be the last we hear from the boys in Marvin's Revolt.

You played The Richter Collective's Christmas Bash in Dublin last night how was it?
Martin: Amazing!
Soren: Amazing!

M: Lots of good bands, good people, good crowd.
K: It was a proper celebration of the label.
M: And of the holiday!
S: We had some gigs cancelled in the UK so we decided to come to Ireland and spend some time with our friends and we got to play that gig, it was amazing!

How did you get involved in The Richter Collective?
K: It's a long story but way back when we started recording the songs for Killec our last album I think we finished a raw mix of one of the first songs. I knew, well we knew a guy from Copenhagen called Adam McCormack who used to play in an Irish band called Sylvan a few years back. He moved to Copenhagen and we hung out with him a few times. He said you should definitely send this to Mick, who at the time had this other small indie label called Popular Records. So I sent him that song and he said oh yeah sure I'm gona put that out. These two guys were kind of skeptical thinking he's just going to screw us over because nobody's going to pick up our band on the basis of one song, but then we realized that Mick is trustworthy. We kept the communication going and we found out that he's a totally cool dude and we were actually the first thing he released on Popular Records. Then later on Popular Records got together with Barry from Armed Ambitions and made The Richter Collective. So that's kind of the story.

So this tour is launching your new album Patrolling The Heights how do you think your music has progressed since the last album?
M: I think we have become more aware of how strong we are as a three piece because when we did Killec we had just kicked out the old guitarist and we wrote Killec as a three piece. Then when we played live we thought we needed a fourth guy. This time, I think we've come a long way and found out that we can do more than we expected as a three piece.
S: When we finished the Killec tour we kind of turned a new direction in terms of making songs. We really wanted to record as close to how we play live.

Speaking of playing live you're about to go on tour in Japan with LITE.
K: This is our second time in Japan we were there in February for the first time. We also played with LITE for four shows on that tour, so this is the second time in Japan and it's a longer tour. So it's really exciting!
Definitely, I was on Parabolica's website, the label organizing your tour in Japan and you seem to be the focus of their time at the moment.
K: Yeah, well Parobolica is a proper label. They are well organized, a very serious kind of DIY label. They are very solid and have a financial background that is really strong so they are able to do stuff that most indie labels that we work with are otherwise unable to do. So yeah, it's kind of serious business over there.

I see you will be touring with Adebisi Shank in Copenhagen and around Ireland over the next few weeks?
M: It's always fun to tour with those guys. It's never boring! We've become friends we talk to them on phones just call them up, and on the Internet. So yeah, we are really good friends it's always fun to hangout with those guys.

I want to wrap up by asking you, and you probably get asked this loads but do you have any advice for Irish bands that are just starting out?
S: It's hard work, I think.
K: Get on to Mick!
S: First off they're in the right place because Ireland has a strong DIY scene. There are lots of really cool people putting on shows!
K: And that's the thing we really don't have in Denmark and that's why we're so happy to come here. Even in smaller towns like Cork there is a really good crowd most nights, I don't know about tonight we might have bad luck, but that's a really strong basis for doing stuff.
K: Just focus on the music before anything else!

Let the Right One In (Sweden 2008)

Based on the novel by John Ajvide Lindqvist, I picked up a copy of the DVD in the HMV sales this weekend. I had seen this on the big screen earlier this year having convinced a few of the girls that this would be their thing. Despite all the gore, grind, and the graphic nature of some of director Tomas Alfredson's scenes my mates enjoyed this! It would seem that this is attributed to the romantic nature of the plot.
As well as creating the novel, John Ajvide Lindqvist wrote the screenplay for Let the Right One In thus the film remains faithful to the novel. Let the Right One In or Lat den ratte komma can be described as a love story, one that is unconventional and even disturbing at times. Nevertheless the difficult nature of the protagonists' love affair proves to be tremendously engaging.
Set in the Stockholm suburb of Blackeberg the plot centres around two children, Eli (Lina Leandersson) and Oskar (Kare Hedebrant). Oskar is 12 years old and is being bullied at school. Eli moves in next door to Oskar and he takes a liking to her. From there the pair's relationship flourishes but under unusual circumstances. Let the Right One In is, in essence, a vampire story and the truth behind Eli's circumstances is quite disquieting.
Empire Magazine describe it as "The Best Horror Film Of The Year" this review can be found printed across the cover of the DVD. Describing this film as the the best horror film of the year is scarcely a compliment when one considers some of this year's releases: My Blood Valentine 3D, Friday the 13th (remake), and The Uninvited (remake of Kim Ji-woon's A Tale of Two Sisters). I would like to describe it as the greatest vampire film of the decade. Controversial? Maybe. Even so Let the Right One In fuses romance and horror together resulting in a delightfully disturbing plot that makes this one to add to the DVD collection.

Isis & Altar of Plagues @ Cyprus Ave 22.10.09
Isis arrived in Cork just in time to propel us into the Jazz Weekend and with the mighty return of the 'Doom 101' this year at Freds, Isis were an incredible start to an exhausting but galvanising weekend!
I expected to hear their current album Wavering Radiant (Ipecac 2009) in its entirety, with little room in their set for anything from the likes of Oceanic (Ipecac 2002). Isis surprised us all, their set was an amalgamation of the best of their discography. It was their first time in Cork and they seemed eager to impress the crowd at Cyprus Avenue. This was refreshing, and it was clear that they are still very much in love with what they do.
Aaron Turner thanked local heroes Altar of Plagues (Profound Lore Records) for their support. Handpicked to tour with Isis around Ireland Altar of Plagues' set was mesmerising, reaching the high standard of Isis' live show.
I went on to enjoy Doom 101 at Freds that weekend catching the likes of Moloch, De Novissimis, and Slomatics. Rounding off the madness with Los Langeros at the Quad on Sunday! I must thank Daire and Eimear of KVX for covering New Noise on Thursday night so I could see Isis they did an incredible job. Nice one ladies!

Transcript: Interview w/Monotonix @ Supersonic 09'

I spent the whole summer emailing the ladies at Capsule trying to get interviews at Supersonic 09' for Campus Radio. At the top of my list were Stephen O Malley (Thorr's Hammer/KTL) and Monotonix.
I was thrilled when I got the interview with Monotonix (Tel Aviv, Israel), however it didn't go as smoothly as planned. I met them at 9.45pm, Saturday 25th of July and outside of Yonatan Gat (guitarist) the band seemed aggravated by the prospect of talking to yet another journalist. Can't say I blame em!

Me: Are you excited to be a part of Supersonic this year?

Yonatan Gat: They talked about bringing us here last year but it didn't work out so yeah! Did you fly all the way here just for the festival?

Me: Eh, Yeah all the way from Cork!

Yonatan Gat: Who was your favorite so far?

Me: I saw a great grindcore band Army of Flying Robots last night, definitely my favorite so far!

Yonatan Gat: I saw there's a band called Kylie Minoise playing?

Me: Yeah...crazy live show. I came away covered in bruises. I think that's a sign of a good night!

Me: So, you played the Crawdaddy last night, how was your first Irish show?

Ami Shalev: When we got off the bus at Dublin there were a bunch of drunk Irish people sitting and drinking by the emergency exit doors, and they got out empty 2 litre bottles and starting p**ing in them, and when they were full they left them there and started p**sing on the bus door. It was interesting! And afterward when we asked the driver if everyone was drunk in Ireland he said no! We're not drunk, we're just socialising! Everyone thinks we're drunk but we're just trying to socialise.

This got us all giggling, so I thought it would be a good time to ask them about the music scene in Israel.

Me: Tell me, how does someone get banned from half the music venues in Israel?

Ami Shalev: First of all there are only four venues..

Yonatan Gat: This guy (referring to Ami) he talks too much, he goes there he gets drunk, hits on the girls and it's just too messy...

Me: Is there much of a music scene in Israel?

They pause and look at each other before shaking their heads.

I get the sense I should have stuck with the lighter stuff! I turn off the tape, we chat for a bit it's 10.15pm and they are booked for more interviews! Monotonix went on at 1.15am and it was an unforgettable experience. Ami Shalev stripped down to his undies, and a guy staying with us at the hostel came back with a souvenir from the show: Ami's bright orange waistcoat:)

Monotonix will be playing the Crawdaddy (Dublin) again on November 27th. Not to be missed! :)

Dalek @ Cyprus Ave

Signed to Ipecac in 2002 (Mike Patton’s label: Faith No More/Fantomas) Dalek are currently touring with Gutter Tactics, released in January of this year. Think Run DMC meets Neurosis. Drone meets 80s hip-hop sounds.
It was only my fourth time seeing Dalek, having seen them perform with Zu at this year’s Primavera (Barcelona) and earlier this year at Cyprus Avenue (courtesy of PingPong):)
Wednesday night was exceptional, loud and gritty. I had the same rush I felt when I saw them perform with Zu at Primavera last May. This time Dalek were stripped down to the essentials: MC Will and Oktopus no guest appearances, no visuals and it was highly engaging. My only complaint is that it should have been longer. I’m a massive fan of their album Abandoned Language (Ipecac 2007) check it out!

Pete Docter, writer of Toy Story and Wall E, directs and writes Pixar latest feat Up. Pixar must have considered this feature to be a bit of a risk due to the unconventional nature of its narrative. The story is centered around a lonely, elderly man and can be quite somber in tone. Ellie, the only strong female protagonist in the film has a minor role. Thus, audiences are left to sympathise with senior citizen Carl Fredricksen, and his awkward young companion Russell.

Up follows 78 year old Mr Fredricksen as he sets off on a journey to South America, oddly enough this is accomplished by tying thousands of balloons to his house. Pixar's elderly protagonist proves himself to be quite the action hero in sequences that are reminiscent of Indiana Jones & The Temple of Doom. The bizarre circumstances of Fredricksen's adventure also provides for some unpredictable comedic dialogues, this could be the year's most quotable movie!

Perhaps Pixar's most impressive creation since Toy Story in terms of attention to detail and originality, Up is inspiring. With its stunning animation and original storyline this is a movie that is meant to be seen on the big screen. Catch it if you can!

Ill Eat Your Noise!

So I'm off to Primavera on the 27th of May and I'm leaving New Noise in the capable hands of Barrytron and The Boy (I'll Eat Your Face) with the promise of some interesting tunes!

As much as I can't wait for Primavera (Barcelona-wohoo!) I'm a little sorry I won't be there to see what the lads get up to. They're also about to release their second DVD: Clit 2 on June 5th w/ support from Hands Up Who Wants To Die & Extraterrestrial Insurgency-also @ the Quad.

Their ability to make grindcore witty, and accessible to the masses is unsurpassed-not to be missed!

New Noise

New Noise started up last October at the Quad, Cork.

I attempt to play a wide variety of music, the ultimate goal is to create an enjoyable atmosphere for all! I enjoy playing punk, stuff from Irish labels (Richter Collective, Out on a Limb..) and Electronica.

Altar of Plagues recently had their CD launch at New Noise which went really well! I'm hoping to put together more gigs in the future; on that note feel free to bring your own CDs along to New Noise it's always good to hear something new!

Admission is free and we always show a movie.

Doors are at 11pm.
